The Mother of Holistic Medicine

Dr. Gladys McGarey is widely considered the Mother of Holistic Medicine. A co-founder of the American Holistic Medical Foundation, she pioneered welcoming dads into hospital delivery rooms. In 1970, she co-founded the Academy of Parapsychology and Medicine. She was among the first in medicine to use and teach acupuncture in the US and held the first US medical symposium on acupuncture. She created the first and only ARE (Association for Research and Enlightenment) clinic based on the work of Edgar Cayce. She founded the Gladys Taylor McGarey Medical Foundation, now known as The Foundation for Living Medicine, in 1989 to bridge the gap between traditional and holistic medicine. At the age of 85, she traveled to Afghanistan to teach safer birthing practices to village women, dramatically reducing infant mortality. In 2009, she created a Task Force with over 100 physicians, nurses, and integrative practitioners that gathered annually to envision a new medical model centered on prevention. She is a published author of 5 books with the 6th scheduled for publication in early 2022. Dr. Gladys is a recipient of numerous awards including induction to the AZ Women’s Hall of Fame.
